"In 2005 we purchased a run down old farm. Our aim was to regenerate back to all perennial pastures including natives and sub tropicals. We have 2200 acres, currently 1000 ewes and growing and 500 rams a year."
The challenge from the start was cost - we started 20 years ago with nothing. We leased a farm for four years and finally saved enough for a deposit and bought our first farm of 700 acres, then eventually expanded with a neighbouring block another 1500, which is where we are today.
Establishment of pasture on our farm has been tricky. From the start we had a pretty good winter base but really poor summer legumes and we decided to move entirely away from any chemical inputs. In our journey to try and resolve our pasture performance, we chatted with Greg at Westec in Barcaldine, who introduced us to Progardes.
Although we are always learning, we have now built excellent diversity into our system to fix our nutrient transfer.
